National Orthodontic Health Month
Posted on 10/16/2015

At Weisner Orthodontics our patient’s oral health is of the utmost importance to our Doctors and the staff. This is why we are happy to announce that October is National Orthodontic Health month. Many of you may not be familiar with National Orthodontic Health Month and what it means, but never fear. The Doctors and staff at Weisner Orthodontics are always searching for ways to educate our patients.

What Does National Orthodontic Health Month Mean?

This is a great question! Every October the American Association of Orthodontists also known as the AAO, observe National Orthodontic Health Month. Throughout the month orthodontists throughout the United States and Canada work to increase public awareness about the benefits of orthodontic care. Orthodontists are encouraged to educate on the positive impact that the orthodontic process can have on not only a person’s dental health but also self-esteem.

Benefits Of Orthodontic Treatment

Most often when people think about orthodontic treatment, they think of bulky metal braces resulting in a straight smile somewhere down the line. However, what few people know is that orthodontics is about more than just providing patients with a beautiful smile. Braces today are quite small and much more comfortable. They can be customized each month with colorful elastics for fun. We can even offer clear ceramic braces or Invisalign to our patients who wish to have a far less noticeable method of treatment. During the orthodontic process your orthodontist also makes sure that you have a healthy bone structure providing you with not only a straight smile, but a healthy smile. Not only will you gain a beautiful smile as a result of having braces and going through the orthodontic process but you will also gain confidence! A beautiful smile has been linked to leaving better first impressions and more success in both professional and personal situations. Often our patients find a new level of self-esteem and confidence once they have the smile they have always wanted!

Protect Your Smile This Halloween!

In the spirit of awareness, we wouldn’t be doing our job during National Orthodontic Health Month if we didn’t warn our patients about breaking brackets during Halloween. While we can’t wait to see what all of our patients dress up as for Halloween, we don’t want to see anyone regress in their orthodontic progress. During this Holiday we ask that parents refrain from letting their child consume hard, sticky or any other hazardous candies for braces.

You can even make this process a little rewarding for your child! Parents have been known to do their very own “candy buy back” with their child. For example, for each five pieces of candy they turn into you, they won’t have to do a certain chore that week. This is a creative and easy way to encourage your child to make healthier choices and avoid breaking any wires or brackets. For more information on food to avoid, visit our page!
